Giro d'Italia 2019

Stage 9 of the Giro d'Italia saw Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma) put in a dominant performance to take the stage and put considerable time into his rivals for the maglia rosa. Valerio Conti (UAE Team Emirates) may have hung onto the race lead but it was Roglic who really benefited after putting major time into Simon Yates (Mitchelton Scott) and Mikel Landa (Movistar). Only Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida) and Bauke Mollema (Trek Segafredo) managed to limit their loses to around a minute, and Roglic now sits as the main favourite to win the race overall.

"It was just different – [Campenaerts] had really dry conditions and I had rain so I couldn’t take any risks in the corner. Then I went all-out in the end," Roglic said at the finish.

"I went really slow in the corners in the beginning but otherwise then on the flat and on the climb [the weather] didn’t matter so much.

"We’ll see at the end [who is still in the mix]. It’s still a long way to go – a lot of kilometres, a lot of mountains – so it’s always nice to have some seconds in your advantage and be focussing on the days to come
