Vuelta a Espana: De Marchi wins stage 11

Yates keeps race lead as breakaway stays away

Alessandro De Marchi (BMC Racing) won the longest stage of this year’s Vuelta a Espana as the rolling Galicia hills sparked a hard day of racing and saw Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) go close to taking the race lead from Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) only to race far too generously and miss out even on a stage victory.

De Marchi and Pinot were part of a 19-rider break that formed after more than 100km of attacks and counter attacks. Pinot wasted energy with a series of attacks before BMC Racing took control at the head of the race and De Marchi powered away with Jhonatan Restrepo (Katusha-Alpecin) on the final climb.

The Italian then dropped his rival in the final kilometres and pouring rain to win alone. Restrepo finished 28 seconds behind De Marchi, with the remains of the break spread across two minutes and Pinot at 1:50.

The overall contenders finished only 2:02 behind after a late acceleration, and so Simon Yates kept the red leader’s jersey, one second ahead of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar). Valverde's teammate Nairo Quintana was aggressive in the final kilometre and remains third overall at 14 seconds.

De Marchi has won just four races in his nine-year career but three have come at the Vuelta a Espana, where he often gets the freedom to use his strength as a domestique to hunt for personal success.

He knew he had to attack alone this time if he wanted to win.

“If I waited for the sprint, for sure I’d have finished second. The only option I had was to try everything on the last climb. Honestly, I didn’t have my best legs, but it was just in the head,” he said after his victory, fatigued but happy.

“At one moment today I just said that I just had to keep trying because it was a real battle. Every move was looking like the good one and then it would come back. I just said: ‘OK, I just do the maximum I can’.”

How it unfolded

The longest stage of this year’s Vuelta a Espana seemed perfect for a breakaway and a quiet day in the peloton for the overall contenders. However, this is Spain and the Vuelta, not France and the Tour, and the roller coaster terrain proved to be a launch pad for another day off aggressive racing.

Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) kicked off the aggression as soon as the flag dropped, keen to test his form as he tries to recover from his fractured vertebrae and perhaps also to vent his anger after news of Kanstantsin Siutsou positive test for EPO. He was soon caught but tried again later, as other attacks formed and were chased down by the peloton.

Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) also tried his hand, with other experienced attackers, but with possible GC contenders often sneaking into the moves, the peloton and especially Mitchelton-Scott tried to keep the race under control. Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky) and Mollema were next to light up the race with attacks and others joined in. Yet the peloton reacted time and tine again, meaning the first two hours were raced at an average of 48km/h despite the lack of flat roads.

The stage included just 11km of flat roads, with dozens of climbs through the Spanish countryside. There were four categorised climbs and the 9.5km Alto de Covelo mid-stage proved to be the gradient that snapped the elastic and saw Michelton-Scott give up on defending Simon Yates’ leader’s jersey.

Ben King (Dimension Data) was the first to sense it was the right moment and attacked before the Alto de Covelo. Yet another acceleration proved to be too much for Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis). The French sprinter appeared to be ill and threw in the towel. The other sprinters, including Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) were in a gruppetto, confirming the speed and aggression of the stage.

King was pulled back but then a 19-rider surged away in yet another tactical attack. Pinot was there but Mitchelton-Scott had Jack Haig policing the move and so opted not to chase the Frenchman, even if he was only 2:33 down in the overall classification.

The break quickly opened a gap, with Pinot’s teammate Leo Vincent doing a lot of work. Movistar had Winner Anacona in the attack but they felt obliged to pick up the chase with 100km to race to lead a controlled chase.

The 19 riders in the attack were: Alessandro De Marchi, Nicolas Roche, Dylan Teuns (BMC Racing), Thibaut Pinot, Léo Vincent (Groupama-FDJ), Franco Pellizotti (Bahrain-Merida), Nans Peters (AG2R-La Mondiale), Omar Fraile (Astana), Rafal Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe), Tiesj Benoot (Lotto Soudal), Jack Haig (Mitchelton-Scott), Winner Anacona (Movistar), Ryan Gibbons (Dimension Data), Pierre Rolland (Education First-Drapac), Jhonatan Restrepo (Katusha Alpecin), Sergio Henao (Team Sky), Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo), Sergio Pardilla (Caja Rural-Seguros-RGA) and Mikel Bizkarra (Euskadi-Murias).

When the gap reached 2:30 after 115km of intense racing, Pinot became the virtual race leader but on the 10.5km Alto de Trives climb after 130km, that seemed to affect his judgment and his ambitions. Frustrated by the riders refusing to work in the break, he attacked over the top of the climb and dragged Teuns with him. That shuck up the break but also used up precious energy, with the other riders eventually getting back up to the Frenchman.

Mollema was next to try his hand in the day of wacky racing that seemed more like Juniors chasing their first victory than experienced professionals. Everyone in the break sensed a chance of success but the rolling roads made it hard to achieve.

The Dutchman opened a gap, but the combined forces of the strongest riders eventually pulled him back on the rolling approach to the 8.8km Mirador de Cabezoas climb 26km from the finish. Pinot, Haig, and Majka were the first across to him and then Pellizotti, Bizkarra, Henao Majka, Benoot, Restrepo, Teuns De Marchi and Roche came across in different accelerations. The strongest had finally emerged.

BMC Racing wisely used their strength in numbers on the Mirador de Cabezoas, with Roche following Restrepo and De Marchi following Bizkarra. Mollema suffered after his miss-timed effort and Pinot was also stuck in the group as the peloton accelerated and ended his spell as virtual race leader.

De Marchi was clearly the strongest up front and eventually powered away alone, dropping Roche and Restrepo. Pinot tried to lead the chase and attack but his group was already 45 seconds back. He had wanted to play poke with his rivals but BMC Racing exposed his bluff.

Restrepo managed to claw his way back to De Marchi on the descent with 18km to go but when the heavens opened and the road kicked upwards again, the Italian kicked away, determined to win the stage. Behind EF Education First-Drapac hit the front with four riders and launched an attack by Michael Woods but it only served to help Movistar and Michelton-Scott sweep up most of the 19-rider break. Only Fabio Aru (UAE Team Emirates) cracked and would lose 41 seconds to his overall rivals. Vincenzo Nibali would figure even worse, finishing 5:50 down.

Upfront, De Marchi dug deep in the rain and fought the gradient of the climb to the finish. It was a huge effort but was worth it and no doubts cements his place in the still leaderless Italian team for the world road race championships in Innsbruck.

Restrepo was both satisfied and disappointed with second place, while Pinot finished tenth at 1:50, gaining just 12 seconds on the GC contenders. He raced with panache and was virtual race leader at one point but was left empty handed in term of stage success and timed gained.

It was De Marchi and BMC Racing’s day, while Movistar seemed happy to keep Yates in red and Valverde and Quintana just behind him.

Thursday’s stage is another day in the hills, this time near the stunning Galicia coast of northern Spain between Mondoñedo and the Estaca de Bares lighthouse near Mañón.
