Stage 16 saw Remco Evenepoel make it successive stage wins as he romped to victory in the individual time trial. His closest competitor was Tadej Pogačar, whose Yellow Jersey lead is down to 4:32 after finishing 28 seconds behind his Belgian rival. There was also sad news as Evenepoel's teammate, Florian Lipowitz, crashed in the closing kilometres of the TT, forcing him to abandon the race.
Today, we have Stage 17 and an opportunity for the breakaway to have a big say in proceedings. Beginning in Chambéry, there's plenty of early climbing, with four separate categorised climbs packed into the opening 60km. That should see plenty of baroudeurs trying to escape the clutches of the peloton from the outset.
From the summit of the Côte de Saint-Jean d'Arvey, those in the breakaway will still have around 115km to hold on, which may seem unfeasible. However, the undulating nature of the route could deny the sprinters a chance in Voiron, with only the strongest climbing sprinters likely to have any sort of opportunity. Expect Mads Pedersen, Mathieu van der Poel, Quinn Simmons and Mathias Vacek to be among those chasing the stage win.
