Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) made it back-to-back victories at the Tour de Pologne Women, scorching to the line in Lubartów on stage 2 to extend her overall race lead on Saturday.
After suffering a late mechanical and changing bikes in the last 10km, Irish champion Lara Gillespie (UAE Team ADQ) chased back on and finished second, responding well to Wiebes' initial surge, but ultimately being unable to match her in the sprint. Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) was third on the day.
The final run to the line was hectic, with the last breakaway attacker, Katherine Sarkisov (Team USA), being caught back with 8.8km to go, and several teams trying to disrupt SD Worx-Protime's dominance.
Lidl-Trek, Fenix-Premier Tech and Picnic PostNL were among them, but with 700 metres to go, the Dutch team emerged back at the front, giving Wiebes enough chance to find a sprinting lane and take the victory.
Wiebes leads the race overall by 18 seconds from Gillespie and 19 from Balsamo, and with just one more flat stage to Lublin remaining, a hat-trick of wins and the GC title looks like the likely outcome from three days of racing in Poland.
