Kortijk Koerse: Sofie van Rooijen out-sprints Charlotte Kool for a second career victory in Belgian race
Kathrin Schweinberger takes third in bunch finish
Sofie Van Rooijen (UAE Development Team L'IMAD) out-sprinted Charlotte Kool (Fenix-Premier Tech) to win Konvert Kortijk Koerse. Kathrin Schweinberger (Human Powered Health) completed the podium from the bunch sprint.
It was the second time in three years that Van Rooijen conquered the laps on the Flemish roads, last edging Chiara Consonni (UAE Development) and Daria Pikulik (Human Powered Health) in 2024.
This time Rooijen had time to raise her arm to celebrate on the wet road from overcast skies and rain. It was her first victory in 10 months.
The Friday race attracted six top level WorldTour teams, all present in Belgium for a series of three one-day races on the Flemish roads, of which this was the last. Kool took the win on Thursday at GP Lucien Van Impe.
For Schweinberger, a third-place finish in the rain and across the cobbles was redemption for a DNF from the day before, where she crashed out.
Now in a fifth edition, the UCI 1.1 race started and finished in Kortrijk and sent riders on a flat course of 127.6km with two large loops south of the city before finishing with six loops of 9km to close the day. Two ascents of the cobbled Beerbosstraat on the opening loops added an early challenge, but with only 842m of climbing the race seemed like one for the sprinters.
A pair of riders formed the day’s breakaway, Loes Adegeest (Lidl-Trek) and Femke Markus (SD Worx-Protime) building a lead onto the closing circuits. But the flat terrain allowed the sprinters to reengage and on the final circuit the WorldTour teams positioned their riders for a bunch sprint.
