Lucy van der Haar wins inaugural Dubai Women's Tour
Steigenga wins final stage in Dubai Festival City
Nicole Steigenga (Doltcini-Van Eyck Sport) won the fourth and final stage of the Dubai Women's Tour in a breakaway sprint held in Dubai Festival City. The Dutch rider beat runner-up Amalie Lutro (Hitec Products-Birk Sport) and Carmela Cipriani (Aromitalia Basso Bikes Vaiano), who placed third.
Lucy van der Haar (Hitec Products-Birk Sport) won the overall title at the inaugural Dubai Women's Tour. The British talent had won stage 1 and briefly held the leader's jersey before reclaiming it on the final day of racing. Stage 3 winner Tatsiana Sharakova (Minsk Cycling Club) finished second overall but with the same time, and stage 2 winner Samah Khaled (Team UAE) finished third at 12 seconds back.
"I am so happy," van der Haar said in a team press release. "It was so close. Until after the finish we weren't sure if I had won the race or not.
"It is nice to do this after not winning a race in a while. The stage itself wasn’t hard today, but there were a lot of attacks and that made it hard. The team did amazing to try and bring everything down and chase everything back. That was really good. We rode so strong together. This is a good start to the season and hopefully we can carry this on."
The women raced 112km in the Dubai Festival City to close out the Dubai Women's Tour. Van der Haar started the day four seconds down in the overall classification behind overnight leader Sharakova. She picked up a time bonus at an intermediate sprint.
As the leading group took the remaining bonus seconds at the finish line, there were no seconds left for the peloton and van der Haar won the overall title.
