Tour de France Femmes: Sigrid Haugset stuns field with long-range solo attack to land signature stage 3 victory and swipe yellow jersey
Lotte Kopecky chases for more than 70km and takes settles for second on hilly stage into Poligny
Sigrid Haugset (Uno-X Mobility) won stage 3 of the Tour de France Femmes with an enormous solo ride of 88 kilometres, also taking the yellow jersey in the process.
Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) finished second while Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike) won the sprint of a reduced group for third.
Haugset had gone solo from a breakaway of 11 riders on the Col de la Savine with 87km to go. Kopecky then went on the chase from the peloton with 75km remaining, when Haugset was already 1:30 ahead.
For a long time, Haugset kept her gap to Kopecky relatively stable while the peloton sat up, letting the Norwegian champion get more than five minutes up the road. In the last 40km, Kopecky finally made inroads on Haugset, and at the top of the last climb with 24.7km to go, she was 32 seconds down.
Kopecky eventually had Haugset in sight, only 12 seconds separating them, but the Belgian had overestimated herself and lost time again on the last kilometres, finishing 1:24 behind in second place.
There had been attacks from the GC favourites on the final climb, splitting the peloton, but things came back together in the end.
“I never thought it was possible. Sitting here for the winner’s interview, it’s unreal,” said the stage winner.

Haugset admitted that she had considered waiting for Kopecky.
“It wasn’t many seconds and I thought she will catch me. I thought, ‘should I just drop down to her? Second is good’. But I kept on. The car was amazing, pushing me.
"I was thinking about all my teammates, everyone cheering from home and it was like, ‘I had to give it all’. I can’t believe that she didn’t catch me. Winnig in the Norwegian jersey, it’s fantastic,” she said, having taken the road race national title for Norway in her last race, which was June 28.
With the stage victory, Haugset also takes the overall lead, but this hadn’t been in her mind during the stage.
“I didn’t think about [yellow]. I was so dizzy at the end. I know my boyfriend will be angry at me for not celebrating, but I could not lift my arms off the bike. It was impossible,” said Haugset.
