Stage 8, the longest stage at 171.9 kilometres, heads south towards Nice where a short steep wall in the city centre, with ramps up to 13.6%, 6km from the finish may well prevent a final sprint.
Starting in Sisteron, the route follows the Route Napoléon for the opening 49 kilometres, before turning westward, tracing the course of the River Var, to tackle the climbs of Col des Robines and Col de Toutes Aures, the latter topping at 95 kilometres to go. A long descent towards the Côte d’Azur follows with two more climbs, Côte de Colomars and Côte de la Ginestière with 7.7 kilometres to go before the finale on the Promenade des Anglais.
