Sergio Mantecón (Wildwolf Trek) and Sally Bigham (Topeak Ergon) won the third stage of the Club La Santa Four-Day MTB Race on Monday. Both riders, who also retained their overall lead, were the fastest in a 25km individual time trial with an average uphill gradient of five percent.
Racers started on the Famara beach at one or two minute intervals. They raced up a gravel track for about 20 minutes, when it turned into singletrack. Then they climbed steadily toward a church marking the finish at the summit.
Mantecón took his start, and with little surprise, he set the best time. He even overtook German Simon Stiebjahn at approximately 13km into it. The German had started two minutes ahead. Mantecon's time was 51 minutes and five seconds. Portugal's Tiago Ferreira was second at 1:14 while German Christian Kreuchler was third at 1:45.
Carlos Coloma, who finished sixth at the London Olympics, has been getting faster each day and finished in seventh.
In the women's race, Bigham stopped the clock at 1:03:57. Sandra Santanyes was well behind her, nearly 13 minutes later. Mar Franco Peñuela was third at 1:20:25.
Tuesday's final stage will be the longest and toughest, at 80km with 1800m of climbing.
