Deceuninck-Quick Step claimed the opening stage of the Adriatica Ionica Race, with Colombian Alvaro Hodeg sprinting to victory with Florian Senechal and Philippe Gilbert at his side for second and third.

The Belgian team made its presence known on the 23km of gravel roads in the 189km stage.

"I want to share this win with all my teammates," Hodeg said. "We controlled the front of the peloton for the whole day. I even crashed twice today, at the beginning of the stage and then with 25 kilometres to go, together with Gilbert, Honoré and Evenepoel. Nevertheless, we managed to win".

A five-man breakaway made waves in the first part of the stage, with Mauricio Moreira (CajaRural-Seguros RGA), Guy Niv (Israel Cycling Academy), Etienne Van Empel (Neri Sottoli-Selle Italia-KTM), Thimo Willems (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise) and Umberto Poli (Team Novo Nordisk) getting up to five minutes on the peloton. But with five gravel sectors coming, they were reeled in with 70km remaining.

There were a flurry of attacks until Philippe Gilbert (Deceuninck Quick Step) and Sep Vanmarcke (EF Education First) whittled down the front group to 22 riders then delivered Hodeg to the stage victory.
