Stage 3 - 15 May 2012
San José – Livermore

In a move that will be applauded by the majority of the peloton, this year’s race will be bypassing the brutal climb of Sierra road for the first time in the event’s seven-year history.

Climbing the more rider-friendly Calaveras road, the racers will pass through Livermore for the first time, with sprint points awarded downtown. Devil Mountain, a popular Bay Area climb, then awaits as a new addition to the race.

While the final climb, Patterson Pass, appears as a tame 5 per cent on the profile, it’s usually into a rushing headwind. climbing through a sea of wind turbines, a breakaway group will most likely be doomed and Livermore’s first ever stage finish will probably be a bunch sprint by the whole peloton. look for the sprinters’ teams to be up front controlling the race.

Christian Vande Velde: The GC guys will be pulling their punches until the real climbing days like Big Bear and Mt Baldy. I think a 40-man group could get over the final climb together. The winner will be a guy who can climb but also sprint.
