Quintana wins Vuelta Asturias queen stage

Nairo Quintana (Movistar) overcame wintry conditions at the Vuelta Asturias Sunday to win the queen stage atop Alto del Acebo, crossing the line ahead of Raul Alacron (W52/FC Porto) in a two-up sprint. Fernando Barcelo (Spanish National Team) was third, 31 seconds back.

The 177km stage from Soto de Ribera to the finish on the first-category climb of Alto del Acebo was contested in inclement conditions with cold temperatures and rain battering the peloton before the precipitation turned to snow on the final ascent. Quintana attacked with 2.5km to go and took Alacron, who finished second in Saturday's opening stage, with him.

Alacron now leads Quintana in the general classification by seven seconds, with Alejandro Manu Marque (Sporting-Tavira) in third, 50 seconds back. The three-day race  concludes Monday with a 125km stage from Cangas del Narcea to Oviedo.
