Vuelta a Burgos: Moschetti wins stage 2 bunch sprint

Matteo Moschetti (Polartec Kometa) won the bunch sprint at the end of stage 2 at the Vuelta a Burgos in Castrojeriz. The Italian out-kicked Jon Aberasturi (Euskadi Basque Country-Murias) and Davide Ballerini (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec) to take the victory.

Aberasturi took the overall lead from stage 1 winner Francesco Gavazzi (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec), who slips to fourth, but he has the same time as runner-up Tao Geoghegan Hart (Team Sky) and third-placed Pello Bilbao (Astana).

The race heads into stage 3 on Thursday with a 149km race between Sedano and Picon Blanco.

How it unfolded

Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Burgos was a 163km race between Beloradoc and Castrojeriz. The day's parcours included a category 3 climb that peaked at the 20km mark followed by intermediate sprints at 50km, 95km and 130km, and then a rolling finale with a descent to the finish line in Castrojeriz.

A breakaway of six riders set off early in the race that included Jeremy Cornu (Direct Energie), Juan Antonio López-Cozar and Egoitz Fernandez (Team Euskadi), Jesus Ezquerra Muela (Burgos BH), Alejandro Ropero (Polartec Kometa) and Thibault Guernalec (Fortuneo-Samsic).

Lopez Cozar took the full points atop the day's only categorized ascent at Alto de Valmala. In the intermediate sprints, Fernandez picked up the full set at the first sprint in Atapuerca. Lopez Cozar nipped Fernandez at the line in the second sprint in Sotopalacios; however, Fernandez gained top points again in the final intermediate sprint in Villanueva de Argano.

The six men held their gap at roughly two minutes with 30km to go, but that was cut drastically to 30 seconds heading into the closing kilometres. The breakaway split apart up over the rolling terrain with Cornu and Lopez Cozar making a final effort to hold a gap out as long as possible.

Androni-Sidermec, with stage 1 winner and race leader Gavazzi, set a quick pace behind along with Astana and Movistar, but it was Team Sky that assumed the lion's share of the work, bringing in the last of the breakaway riders ahead of the anticipated bunch kick.

Movistar's lead-out was the most organised in the final kilometre but their man Carlos Barbero only managed sixth in the bunch kick as Moschetti sprinted to the stage win ahead of Aberasturi and Ballerini.
