Tour Cycliste International du Haut Var-matin 2017: Stage 1 Results

Samuel Dumoulin (AG2R La Mondiale) won the uphill sprint to Saint-Paul en Forêt on the first of two stages of the Tour du Haut Var-matin, beating Arthur Vichot (FDJ). Maxime Vantomme (WB Veranclassic) was third.

With no time bonuses on the line, the top three in the stage also make up the top three in the overall classification, all tied on the same time. Dumoulin leads the points classification, while Marco Bernardinetti (Amore & Vita) took out the day's biggest climb, the Mur de Fayence, from the breakaway to take the mountains classification lead. Tom Bohli (BMC) is best young rider.

"It’s always nice to kick off the victory tally for the team," Dumoulin said. "I have had it on my mind for a while. There was a big stage today in Oman, and it would have made me very happy if one of the guys there had won that race. But we also reconnoitered the finish of this stage, and knew that I could be a player in the finale. We showed our collective strength.

"I hope that my victory will encourage many more for the team!"

The Tour du Haut Var has only one more stage, a 206km long stage around Draguignan with five mountain primes, the last of which tops out with 70km to go. "We will do everything we can to get a second victory tomorrow," Dumoulin promised.
