Colombian tops home team in opening stage

Julian Muñoz sprinted to the stage win and overall lead of the Volta Ciclistica Internacional de Gravatai, topping the Funvic - Pindamonhangaba duo Roberto Pinheiro and Edgardo Simon to claim the first leader's jersey.

The 180km stage began with a breakaway from Roderik Asconeguy (Porongos-Uruguay) and Leonardo Diaz (Orbital-Argentina) but the pair were caught with 70km still left to race. The peloton resisted any further escape attempts, setting up the bunch sprint into Torres.

The Colombian winner didn't intend to try for the stage win, staying he was leading out UNE-EPM teammate Jaime Castañeda, but his captain lost his wheel in a roundabout.

"I really enjoyed the race and we went through some beautiful places," said Muñoz, who added that he will try to defend his overall lead.
