Yuri Metlushenko (Ukraine National Team) won stage 1 of the Tour of Hainan and took possession of the race leader's yellow jersey. The Ukrainian beat Kenny Van Hummel (Skil-Shimano) and Michele Merlo (Footon-Servetto) in the sprint at the end of an 85km-long circuit race around Sanya. Tuesday's second stage sees the peloton cover 167.5km on the road to Wuzhishan.
