Steele Von Hoff (Genesys Wealth Advisers) took the opening stage of the 2011 Lakes Oil Tour of Gippsland with a dominant sprint over punchy New Zealander Rico Rogers (Lakes Oil).

Von Hoff, who has only recently turned to full-time road racing said he was inspired to win having watched Cadel Evans' history making Tour de France win.

"It was amazing watching the Tour de France and Cadel was fantastic, definitely the strongest rider in the race," he said. "I want to get on a pro team overseas and see where that leads me and of course - it’s everybody’s dream to ride the Tour de France."

Von Hoff will wear the yellow leader's jersey going into this afternoons second stage, a road race around the Wonthaggi area.
