Germany swept to gold in the men’s and women’s team sprint competitions on day 1 of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Manchester on Friday. Kristina Vogel and Miriam Welte saw off Russia to win gold, while there was disappointment for the home nation, with Great Britain only managing eighth in qualifying before losing to Germany in the semi-finals. In the men’s race Germany edged out Beat Cycling Club, as the Netherlands saw off the challenge from Great Britain to win bronze.

Great Britain did see Katie Archibald win silver in the women’s Omnium, while the men’s pursuit team qualified fastest with the final set to take place on Saturday with Denmark also competing for the gold medal.

Archibald went into the final event of the women’s Omnium with just one point separating here from Jennifer Valente of the United States. It was the American who came out on top, however, finishing third in the Points race, while Archibald could only manage seventh. Valente finished the competition with 139 points, with Archibald at 134 points and Amalie Dideriksen taking third with 120 points.

In other events, Rachele Barbieri (Italy) beat Qianyu Yang (Hong Kong) and Jolien D'hoore (Belgium) in the women’s scratch race. In the men’s equivalent Nikita Panassenko (Kazakhstan) came out on top, ahead of Jonathan Mould (Wales), and Wim Stroetinga (Netherlands).
