Cancellara wins road gold in Switzerland

Fabian Cancellara has closed out the Swiss national championships by winning the mens road race on Sunday afternoon, in Nyon.

BMC duo of Mattias Frank and Thomas Frei were the only riders able to follow Cancellara when the Saxo Bank rider attacked the field in the closing laps of the race.

Showing the form that took him to recent overall victory in the Tour de Suisse Cancellara was too strong for Frank in the final sprint. The two leaders finishing 18 seconds clear of Frei.

For runner up, Frank, it was his second silver of the Swiss championships after finishing behind Reubens Bertogliati in Wednesday’s individual time trial.

BMC directeur sportif John Lelangue was please with the result of his riders. "Taking 2nd and 3rd is an accomplishment for this team, especially seeing how strong Cancellara is at the moment," he said.

Cancellara will now head to the Tour de France dressed in the jersey of Swiss champion. Despite having won the national time trial seven, today’s win was Cancellara’s first in the road race.
