Mourey claims victory in Belgium

Frenchman outwits BKCP-Powerplus duo
Frenchman Francis Mourey claimed his first win on Belgian soil this season with victory in the Grote Prijs De Ster in Sint Niklaas, Belgium on Saturday. The Française des Jeux rider sprinted to victory ahead of BKCP-Powerplus teammates Radomir Simunek and Dieter Vanthourenhout.
Mourey had formed part of an early lead group that also included Belgium's Vanthourenhout, American Jonathan Page and Dutchman Gerben De Knegt. The four were joined by Italy's Enrico Franzoi and Czech rider Peter Dlask.
Despite a fall mid-way through the race, Mourey was able to reconnect with the lead group, as did Simunek.
Simunek was the first rider to attack on the final lap, but his rivals had his measure. Early pace-setter Page suffered a flat on the last lap which prevented him from contesting the final sprint. Mourey proved the strongest in a long sprint finale to take the victory.
"I was at the mercy of the BKCP pair, but that I was still able to get the job done is encouraging," Mourey told Het Nieuwsblad afterwards. "Of course it was different race with the absence of Sven Nys and Niels Albert, but we still had a quality field. Fortunately I still had enough to sprint for the win; my first in Belgium."
