Safety
The issue of safety in cycling is becoming increasingly prominent in the professional peloton, as big, high-profile crashes and incidents have brought problems and concerns to light and sparked action and attention from riders, organisers, and the sport’s governing bodies.
Issues surrounding safety include increasing speeds in the peloton brought on by more aerodynamic equipment, extreme weather and traffic calming infrastructure that creates obstacles in races.
The UCI is in charge of creating rules that increase safety, and they regulate everything from bicycle frame design, weight, materials and sizing. They also police safety rule violations in races with the 'yellow card' system designed to deter repeat offences. The SafeR project works with stakeholders to improve conditions for riders.
