American Sarah Hammer dominated the opening events of the women's omnium, winning her qualifying heat before going on to set the fastest mark in the flying lap. She then went on to claim the victory in the points race after lapping the field twice.

In the men's omnium, Colombian Juan Esteban Arango Carvajal edged further ahead of Britain's Ed Clancy with a win in the individual pursuit.

Victoria Pendleton sailed through the qualifying rounds for the women's sprint, while Sandie Clair (France), Kristina Vogel (Germany) and Lyubov Shulika (Ukraine) also moved through to the semifinals.
