Great Britain and Australia came out on top on day two of the UCI Track World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Saturday.
Australia, comprising of Daniel Fritter, Alexander Porter, Miles Scotson and Samuel Welsford claimed gold in the men’s team pursuit, holding off the challenge from Great Britain in the battle for the gold medal. The Australians clocked a time of 3:55.976, and although they started slower than Great Britain, they were ahead after 2,000 meters.
Jonathan Dibben, Steven Burke, Andrew Tennant and Mark Christian, faded in the closing stages to finish with a time of 3:58.129. In the race for bronze Germany proved too powerful for Switzerland.
In the women’s equivalent the Great Britain team secured gold against Canada in the final, with China coming out on top against New Zealand in the race for bronze. Laura Trott, Elinor Barker, Ciara Horne and Amy Roberts, set a time of 4:21.256, almost five second faster than Canada. Great Britain had seen off China in their semi-final ride.
Great Britain’s second gold medal of the day came in the men’s team sprint with Olympic champions Philip Hindes, Jason Kenny, joined by Callum Skinner. The trio - who had finished second in qualifying - saw off a spirited Germany by the slimmest of margins, 43.092 to 43.106. New Zealand crossed the line in a time of 42.769 to beat The Netherlands in the race for bronze.
In the women’s individual sprint Anastasia Voinova (Russia) beat Shuang Guo for gold. Cuba’s Lisandra Guerra Rodriguez beat Elis Ligtlee (The Netherlands). Anna Meares had returned to action but was unable to make the semi-finals, eventually having to settle for fifth.
