James Williamson (Hyster-Total Rush) doubled up on stage three of the Elgas Tour of the Murray River by the stage victory and control of the general classification. The 21-year-old New Zealander was part of a brave breakaway with Timothy Dalgliesh (Merida) that animated the day’s racing.

Williamson and Dalgliesh broke clear a little under halfway into the 100km afternoon stage, and the duo’s collaboration quickly reaped a dividend as they built up a 3:30 lead with 15km remaining. In a hectic finale, however, the bunch began to close dramatically. In the closing kilometres, Dalgliesh wilted and it was left to Williamson to solo to victory and he ultimately crossed the line just 23 seconds clear of a speeding peloton.

Rico Rogers (Swan Hill Rural City Council) took the bunch sprint for second ahead of Nicholas Walker (Jayco VIS) at the Rich River Golf Resort.

Williamson goes into tomorrow’s 45km criterium in Swan Hill 21 seconds clear of Joel Pearson (Genesys Wealth Advisers) and a further second ahead of Stuart Shaw (Drapac) and Richard Lang (Jayco Skins).
