Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil-DCM) scored the first win of the season today for both himself and his Dutch ProTeam in stage two of the Tour Méditerranéen. The 26-year-old French sprinter outkicked Italians Davide Appollonio (Sky) and Danilo Napolitano (Acqua & Sapone) in the field sprint finale after 120km of racing to Rousset.

Unlike the opening stage where the day's breakaway narrowly held on for victory, today the peloton absorbed the day's escapees with 20km to go and kept the pace high through to the finish.

"I saw that the finish would be good for me and I knew that leaving the last turn in good position I had a chance to win," Feillu told Cyclism'Actu.

"I'm happy because the form was good and the confidence was there too. The Tour Med is not Paris-Nice or the Tour de France, but it's still a beautiful race and good for the confidence because there are some good sprinters here."

The Frenchman hopes to capitalise on his good form again in tomorrow's 130km stage from Carnoux-en-Provence to La Farlede.

"I think there's a chance of that (a victory) happening again in the sprint so I will try to win again tomorrow because the weekend promises to be tougher," said Feillu.

Stage one winner and race leader Thomas Voeckler (Team Europcar) finished comfortably in the field to remain atop the general classification. Feillu, however, moved into second place overall due to the 10-second winner's time bonus. The Vacansoleil-DCM Frenchman trails Voeckler by three seconds while stage one runner-up Laurent Mangel (Saur-Sojasun) holds third overall, four seconds down on the French national champion.
