Stéphane Poulhies (Saur-Sojasun) won the field sprint deciding the 144.4km first stage of the Tour de l'Ain in Saint-Vulbas. The 25-year-old Frenchman bested Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil) and Jean-Lou Païani (French National Espoirs Team) for the victory, his team's 19th of the season.

The six-second time bonus earned by Feillu for finishing second moved him into the leader's jersey. Prologue winner Haimar Zubeldia (Team RadioShack) drops into second place, four seconds behind Feillu, while prologue runner-up Wilco Kelderman (Rabobank Continental) holds third place on general classification tied on time with Zubeldia.

"The riders are doing well and we will defend the jersey tomorrow," said Hilaire Van Der Schueren, Vacansoleil team manager. "The stages on Friday and Saturday are difficult."

The peloton faces a 138.8km stage from Le Parc Des Oiseaux to Trevoux on Thursday.
