Phinney wins final time trial, overall

America’s Taylor Phinney (Trek-Livestrong U23) claimed his first overall European stage race win by taking victory on Olympia Tour’s final stage. Phinney was nine seconds quicker over the 9.5 kilometre stage than Rohan Dennis (Team Jayco-Skins).

Dennis was joined on the podium by teammate Michael Hepburn, who denied New Zealand’s Jesse Sergent (Trek-Livestrong U23) of the final podium place by four seconds. Jayco-Skins team director James Victor was pleased with the Australian squad’s finish at the Dutch race.

"It was an amazing final ride by Rohan," said Victor. "He has worked hard and ridden good position all week and he deserved to finish strongly.

"Michael was off the start ramp early and had the fastest time until another 80-plus riders later when Rohan powered around the flat course," added Victor. "Rohan was four seconds slower than Michael with five kilometres remaining but he dug deep into the head wind section to take back ten seconds on Michael by the finish."

Phinney’s stage victory increased his winning margin in the overall classification to 1:17 minutes over Coen Vermeltfoort (Rabobank Continental Team). Strong times on the final stage moved Sergent up into third overall, while Dennis moved to fourth place.

Phinney’s previous best overall placing in a European stage race came earlier in the year when he finished second at Belgium’s Le Triptyque des Monts et Châteaux – Frasnes. His previous stage race victory came in Canada where he won the Tour de l’Abitibi in 2007.
