Team RadioShack may have been decimated by the virus which knocked half its team out of the race, but its new Portuguese revelation came to the rescue with a sensational victory in the 6.8km time trial.

Machado powered to the line a full two seconds faster than overall race leader Luis Leon Sanchez (Caisse d'Epargne) with Frenchman Anthony Roux (Francaise des Jeux) in third.
The overall leader's jersey stayed on the shoulders of Sanchez, but Machado moved himself into second, now just eight seconds behind the Caisse d'Epargne rider.
The morning's winner Anthony Ravard (AG2R La Mondiale) did enough to hold onto the lead in the points classification. Marko Kump (Adria Mobil) is still best young rider, while Radioshack's Yaroslav Popovych's mountains jersey went uncontested.
