Olympic champion Sánchez takes control in Burgos

Euskaltel Euskadi's Samuel Sanchez is the new leader of the Tour of Burgos after winning the 163 km second stage between Burgos and Miranda de Ebro - Alto de San Juan del Monte. The Olympic champion out-sprinted Jose Ivan Gutierrez (Caisse d'Epargne) on the steep slopes of the category three climb to the line.

Sanchez took over the race leadership from teammate Koldo Fernandez de Larrea, taking his third win of the season after the stage in the Tour of the Basque Country and the Klasika Primavera.

"It is our second stage and second race lead in the Tour, and I think we've achieved a major objective. We already achieved the main goal of winning a stage, so we're very satisfied," said Sanchez.

The Spaniard is just coming off a close fourth place finish in the Tour de France, and carried his Tour form through the post-race fatigue into the Tour of Burgos. In order to win the overall race, he faces several challenging stages which will test the strength of his Euskaltel-Euskadi team.

"In theory the next two days are key, the team time trial tomorrow and the finish in Lagunas de Neila, but that is another story. Let's enjoy the two wins, doubles rarely come in this style and you have to value it and enjoy it. "
