Contentpolis-Ampo to make Grand Tour debut
Vuelta organisers acknowledge team with wildcard invitation
Contentpolis-Ampo will make its grand tour debut at the 2009 Vuelta a España, following the announcement of teams invited to the Spanish race on Friday. The squad is one of five non-ProTour teams selected by race organiser, Unipublic, to take the startline when the race begins at the end of August.
The news of the wildcard invitation is a boost for Contentpolis-Ampo, who are in their first season as a Professional Continental squad. The Spanish team will likely rely upon experienced riders like Julián Sánchez to guide younger members of the squad through the three week race. In May, Sánchez won a stage at the Volta a Catalunya. The former Fassa Bortolo rider also took home the race’s overall mountain classification.
Speaking in relation to the news of their invitation a delighted team manager, José Antonio Ortuño, has indicated that the team will look to justify their involvement in the race when it in starts in Assen, the Netherlands on the 29th of August.
"[We] will expend every last gram of effort to benefit the spectacle [of the race] and look to obtain the best possible results.”
