Young Italian Elia Viviani claimed the first victory of the season for his Liquigas-Cannondale team, out-sprinting Roberto Ferrari (Androni Giocattoli), winner of two stages in the Tour de San Luis, and another promising young rider, Elia Favalli (Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli).
Viviani, just two days shy of his 22nd birthday, was helped to the victory by teammate Peter Sagan, who held on for fourth place.
Alessandro Petacchi, winner of the past two editions and a five-time champion of the event, did not participate.
