Stage 12 features only one major obstacle, the third-category Alto de Santibáñez de Ayllón after 66 kilometres. The climb may serve as a springboard for a large break who are prepared to cooperate for the final 100 kilometres. The last three kilometres are uphill, so the sprinters teams may be prepared write the stage off, giving a break more of a chance.
