Chilean-Swiss duo wins stage 3
By Cycling News published
Flat costs American leaders the day's victory
Swiss racer Simon Zahnd and Chilean Javier Püschel won the third stage of Trans Andes Challenge that covered 77km and started at the Menetue thermal complex and finished at the Coñaripe thermal complex. It highlighted the Villarrica National Park and passed through the Araucaria forest.
Fifteen miles into the stage, Ben Sonntag and Jason Sager (Jamis) went off the front and earned a slight gap that they gradually increased. However, in the final third of the race, on a downhill, one of the Jamis riders punctured.
Trek-Zaboo-DaMatta's Püschel and Zahnd took over the lead and went on for a win in three hours, 17 minutes and 25 seconds. Sonntag and Sager finished two minutes and 30 seconds later in second place. Third overall and first among the single racers was Australian Taigh Banson, who crossed the line in 3:21:01.
Americans Mary McConneloug and Michael Broderick (Team Kenda/Seven/NoTubes) were the top mixed team, finishing in 3:27:58.
Thursday's stage 4 will include 83km, including some technical sections over mountainous terrain.
