Joel Pearson, one of the most consistent performers in Australian domestic cycling, moved a step closer today to snaring his first major stage-race victory by claiming the Tour of the Murray River’s lead.

Pearson, whose previous biggest triumph was the 2008 Melbourne to Warrnambool Classic, won the 103km road race from Swan Hill to Nyah West in grand sprinting style, defeating the speedy Malaysian Harrif Saleh, with West Australian Anthony Giacoppo third.

Pearson, a member of the Tasmanian-based Genesys Wealth Advisers team, finished runner-up to the blisteringly-quick Queenslander Jonathan Cantwell in last year’s Murray tour and also annexed the coveted WHK criterium championship.

While Cantwell has dominated United States criterium racing this year, with numerous victories including the 17-day Superweek Classic, Pearson has quietly planned a full-on assault on the Murray tour after undergoing a serious hip operation just four months ago.

He trailed Williamson by only eight seconds overnight but gave the impression throughout the stage that he is cyclist full of confidence and destined for what would be a popular and well-deserved victory.
