The icy cold conditions in the Tour Mediterranean had little effect on the Finnish rider Jussi Veikkanen. He handed his Francaise des Jeux team its second consecutive stage win and took over the lead on GC from teammate Yahueni Hutarovich with the victory.

It was a great save by the team after the sprint lead-out train of Vacansoleil, which led the peloton into the finish in Trets, was led off-course by a race official. Veikkanen was one of the lucky ones to be first to get on the correct course and out-sprinted the Big Mat-Auber 93 pair Fabien Bacquet and Johan Mombaerts.

The stage was dominated by the three-man breakaway of Stefano Garzelli (Acqua & Sapone), Dan Martin (Garmin-Transitions) and Sébastien Turgot (Bouygues Telecom).

The trio broke apart in the run-in to Trets, with only Martin suriviving until the 1km to go mark.

Officials are keeping a close eye on the weather for the third stage from Greasque to Six Fours as winter weather is expected to move into the area.
