Vogel wins over Sauser in Engleberg

As a sort of preview for the Swiss Championships next weekend, the Swiss Racer Bikes Cup was run in Engleberg on Sunday. In the men's race, European Champion Florian Vogel won ahead of World Champion Christoph Sauser. In the women's race, Katrin Leumann (goldwurst-power / Sputnik) won in front of Nathalie Schneitter (Colnago).

For Sauser, it was his first race in Switzerland since he won the world championships last year. On the 3,200m course, the pace was extraordinarily high from the start. Silvio Bundi (Giant-Swiss-Team) set the pace, but then Vogel took over along with Martin Gujan (Cannondale Factory Racing), Martin Fanger (Giant-Swiss-Team), Lukas Flückiger (23 degrees/Trek).

Fanger, just 21, delighted fans by staying for awhile with the leaders before he faded.

In the seventh of ten laps, Vogel finally escaped the group and held the lead until the end. Sauser got a bad start and at the half-way point, he was only in 10th position, but he rode a powerful finish to the race, and on the ninth lap, he battled Lukas Flückiger for second. Sauser took second with Flückiger in third.

Martin Gujan (Cannondale Factory Racing) was fourth, and Fanger finished fifth and as the best Under 23 rider.

Favorite Kathrin Leumann, Swiss champion, won the women's race by three minutes over Nathalie Schneitter. Vivienne Meyer surprised with a strong third place.

Michelle Hediger (Fischer-BMC) won the junior women's race ahead of Mariske Strauss (MTN) and Tanja Starkermann (Fischer Junior MTB Team).

Matthias Stirnemann (Merida Suisse Team) took the junior men's race ahead of Reto Indergand (TG Zentralschweiz/IG RS-Uri) and Lukas Loretz (Giant-Swiss-Team).

Matthias Rupp won the Amateur & Masters race once more.
