Italian Tony Longo (Full Dynamix) took the lead after winning stage 1 of the inaugural Tour de la Ville d'Aoste. The 6.5km time trial began and ended in the centre of Aosta.
Longo's win came shortly after he finished 16th and as the top Italian at the Houffalize World Cup in Belgium, in 16th place. He has previously won a silver medal in the team relay and the under 23 cross country at the World Championships.
Gerhard Kerschbaumer (Gruppo Sportivo Foresta) and Johannes Schweiggel (Silmax Cannondale Racing) rounded out the top three spots.
In the women's race, Italian Serena Calvetti (Team Gebi Sistemi) defeated Japan's Rie Katayama (Team La Pomme Look) and Switzerland's Sofia Pezzati (Team Wittwer) for the stage win and chance to be the first leader in the race.
Favorite Ukraine Alla Boyko, winner of junior world championship cross country in 2007, slipped with 300m to go and finished fourth.
Stage 2 will happen on Friday, May 14 from Aosta. It will run through the Tsatelet nature reserve and travel to Saint Christophe. The 5.5km course will be repeated five times.
