Columbia-HTC dominate in Dutch time trial

Columbia-HTC team-mates Ellen Van Dijk and Linda Villumsen claimed the top two positions in the Holland Ladies Tour’s time trial. Villumsen posted a time just nine seconds off Van Dijk’s time, preventing Marianne Vos (DSB Bank - Nederland Bloeit) from splitting the pair by just one second.

"It was a hard stage to win," Van Dijk said. "After a first long straightaway, there were lots of corners and I had to take a lot of risks. It was really scary."

The stage victory helped lift Van Dijk to second place overall. Fellow Dutchwoman Kirsten Wild (Cervelo TestTeam) continues to lead the race after winning the opening stage in a bunch sprint.

While the riders suffered from blustery conditions again during the 13.3 kilometre time trial, the rain had abated for the day’s stage. “Getting a win in your home country like today is something very special, and I'm really pleased,” said Van Dijk. “Last week I rode in the Dutch national time trials and got third, which was ok, but I'd wanted to do better.

“So here I had a point to prove to myself and I managed to get the win,” she added. “And with Linda in second, it's been a great day for Columbia-HTC."

Cervelo TestTeam is determined to maintain its lead during the race, according to sports director Jens Zemke. "The goal of the team is to keep the jersey within the team in the comings days,” said Zemke. “Tomorrow we will an opportunity as there are two bonus sprints during the race and then seconds to be won as well at the finish."
