Santiago Mesa (Anicolor-Campicarn) was awarded the stage 2 victory after a photo-finish sprint into Albufeira at the Volta a Portugal. He crossed the line just a whisker ahead of runner-up Daniel Cavia (Burgos Burpellet BH), while Tomas Contte (Aviludo-Louletano-Loulé) was third on the day.

Rui Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) was sixth on the day and maintained his overall race lead by three seconds ahead of Rafael Reis (Anicolor-Campicarn) and nine seconds ahead of Carlos Miguel Salgueiro (Team Tavira-Crédito Agrícola) as the race heads into stage 3 on Saturday.
