Map and profile

Stage 1 - 13 May 2012
Santa Rosa
Vineyards and coastal views
After a one-year hiatus, the race returns to three-time champion Levi Leipheimer’s adopted home town of Santa Rosa. His popularity here is huge and his King’s ridge Gran Fondo draws over 6,000 cyclists each year and shares major sections with this stage route.

Before the riders head out into the depths of Sonoma county they will embark on a 48km loop through vineyards northwest of town. The first sprint will occur as the peloton returns to downtown Santa Rosa. Meyers grade road offers spectacular views of the Pacific coastline and includes sections up to 18 per cent in a roller coaster ride down to the iconic Highway 1.

The short, steep coleman Valley road climb has been in several other editions but has yet to produce a split which survived to the finish.

Distance: 186.5km Highest point: 518m Category: Flat/ rolling

Levi Leipheimer: "I think it’s going to be an exciting way to open up the race. It will get people excited. Meyers Grade Road will be on live TV so it will be important for Sonoma County. It is not a hard stage but with Coleman Valley, it is not easy either.
