Christopher Juul-Jensen wins overall title at Tour of Denmark

Chris Juul-Jensen (Tinkoff-Saxo) sealed only his second professional victory with the overall win on the final stage of the Tour of Denmark, as his teammate Michael Morkov won the final stage into Frederiksberg. Matti Breschel took second to make it a 1-2 for the team and to secure the points jersey.

“It’s difficult to describe this," Juul-Jensen said. "On top of the overall win, we finish off with a very well deserved stage win for Michael Morkov. It was something special to enter the laps and streets here in Copenhagen that I know so well with this huge turnout. It was a mixture of being focused on making it to the finish line to secure the lead and enjoying it but I must admit that I was confident all because of this group of riders that I have around me."

Juul-Jensen began the day with a 45-second lead over fellow Dane Lars Bak (Lotto-Soudal), following a strong ride in the previous day’s time trial. For the 26-year-old it was all about staying safe on what was expected to be one for the sprinters. The Tinkoff-Saxo rider managed to avoid some late crashes, kept safe near the front by his teammates.

The Bardiani-led peloton caught Brian Van Goethem (Team Roompot), the last of a four-man breakaway, with less than five kilometres to go, setting things up for the sprinters’ teams. However, it was Tinkoff-Saxo that dominated the final run-in as they looked to keep Juul-Jensen out of trouble and set up Breschel for the sprint.

The team came around the final corner with strength in numbers, with three riders going clear and using a fourth to slow the riders behind. Breschel looked certain for the win but, noticing that his rival for the points classification Edvald Boasson Hagen (MTN-Qhubeka) was not going to overhaul him, he sat up and celebrated, and allowed Morkov to take the stage win.
