Biography:
Jasper Philipsen began racing bicycles as a young teenager after suffering an injury playing football. Born on March 2, 1998, he grew up in the same town as former road World Champion and three-time Paris-Roubaix winner Tom Boonen, Mol, Belgium, but he did not look at a pro cycling career early on.
His development on the road as a junior took off with US teams, first BMC Development in 2017 and then Hagens Berman Axeon in 2018. Philipsen excelled across U23 races, winning the GC title at the U23 Le Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux and winning one stage with two other stage podiums at the Giro Ciclistico d’Italia. But he also competed with the Hagens Berman development squad in elite events, finishing third behind Elia Viviani (QuickStep Floors) and Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) at Brugge-De Panne in the spring and winning a stage in Salt Lake City at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah. He also won a UCI 1.2 race, Gylne Gutuer, in the fall, with top 10s at Primus Classic and Grand Prix d’Isbergues.
In 2019 he jumped to the WorldTour, riding for his first two seasons at the top tier with UAE Team Emirates. In his first WorldTour event that season, he won stage 5 of the Santos Tour Down Under. He went on to score 10 top 10s, including a second and third on a pair of stages at the Amgen Tour of California. Three of his top 10s were on stages at the Tour de France.
The next season he won his first Grand Tour stage, sprinting to the stage 15 victory at the Vuelta a España. Earlier in the season he won the points classification at the Tour Down Under and was the second-placed sprinter at the Tour de Pologne and BinckBank Tour.
Philipsen moved to Alpecin-Deceuninck in 2021, where he notched eight victories, two in the Vuelta, and another 12 podiums, half of those in the Tour de France. He also took four consecutive one-day race victories in September, including Eschborn-Frankfurt. The 2022 season was more of the same, with nine victories and 14 podiums, his biggest victory coming on the Champs Élysées at the Tour de France.
With four wins in the Tour de France in 2023 and a green jersey title, Philipsen amassed a total of 19 wins throughout the season and solidified his name as one of the best sprinters in the world. In the last 17 Tour de France sprint stages to date, he had finished in the top three 16 times.
Then Philipsen reached new heights in 2024 when he took his first Monument at Milan-San Remo, which he followed up with a second runner-up finish in a row at Paris-Roubaix. He again succeeded at the Tour de France with three stage wins to go second overall in the points classification, outdone by Biniam Girmay of Intermarché-Wanty. He closed the season with nine more top 10s, including a stage win and points classification title at Renewi Tour and the victory at Sparkassen Münsterland Giro, proving himself as one of the best sprinters in the world.
