Wesemann turns Swiss

T-Mobile's Steffen Wesemann has applied for Swiss citizenship. In an interview on, he explained that he has lived in Küttigen, Switzerland, for many years, his wife and children are Swiss citizens, and that he has optimal training conditions there. He also said that he likes the Swiss mentality: "Friendship and trust are important in Switzerland, the people are interested in each other and are very easy going. I miss all of that in Germany." He denied turning his back on Germany, citing his many friends there and the good memories of having lived in Germany.

The interview is a lot milder in comparison than one which appeared earlier this week in the Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad. In that interview, he indicated that his decision was more to leave Germany, as it was no longer his land or his home, and that he then searched for a new home. He particularly lamented changes in German society since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
