Stage 2 - San Francisco to Aptos - 188.5km

Map and profile

Stage 2 - 14 May 2012
San Francisco – Santa Cruz County

While the stunning Pacific coastline will feature greatly in stage 2, it will be the small roads buried deep in the towering redwood forest of the Santa Cruz Mountains that will decide the day.

Starting in the shadow of the golden gate Bridge, the riders will face 112km of gently-rolling coastal roads before the stage’s major difficulties. With over 1,500m of climbing in the last 75km, this is definitely the sting in the tail that will signal the end of any early breakaway.

The day’s second major climb, Bear creek road, is 32km from Santa cruz, though the narrow, twisty Summit road that follows may impede the chase if a small group goes for it.

The final descent is on San Jose-Soquel road. A concerted team effort such as liquigascannondale working for Peter Sagan may take it.

Chris Horner: Stage 2 will blow the race apart, but it’s not going to decide who wins the Tour of California. It’s going to show which 25 guys are the favourites and quite possibly we will put one of the non-favourites in the leader’s jersey for a day.
