Stage Ten - Monday 15 May
187 kilometres, medium mountain stage
Bluffers guide: Skirting the western edge of the Apennine ridge, the Giro meanders into Umbria, close to the geographical centre of the country. It will alight at wonderful, evocative Assisi, another classic central Italian fortress town which was the birthplace of St. Francis. Back in 1982 Bernard Hinault (three giri ridden, three won) blasted round a time trial win here.
Buon appetito: Strangozzi (literally “Strangled priests”) is long, chopped pasta synonymous with this part of central Italy. Black truffle (“tartufo nero”) is to be found around Norcia, white in the Val Tiberina, and both are perfect partners. You could do a hell of a lot worse…
Local hero: Eros Capecchi (Liquigas) – Likely to be the only Umbrian rider in the race, Capecchi is highly respected within the Italian cycling community. He’ll be hoping for a repeat of his breakthrough 2011 stage win. He triumphed at San Pellegrino Terme, on an undulating stage just like this one.
Bergonzi says: “This is for the punchers. It’s a tough day, with lots of lactic, and so whoever wins will really have to earn it. The time gaps will be small, but it’s about the effect days like today have on what’s to follow.”
