Biography:
Sprint star Dylan Groenewegen won his first stages in road races as a junior in 2011, adding a second at Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne Juniors and a silver medal in the Dutch junior road race nationals. The next year at the age of 19 he turned professional in 2012 and competed with a local Dutch continental team for three seasons.
It was in 2015 that the Dutchman, born in Amsterdam on June 21, 1993, had a breakthrough win in the Arnhem-Veenendaal Classic and Brussels Cycling Classic with the ProContinental outfit, Roompot - Oranje Peloton.
Groenewegen joined his first WorldTour team in 2016, signing with LottoNL-Jumbo. He scored 11 victories that first year at the top tier, highlights including the Dutch National Road Race title and a stage of the Eneco Tour, his first WorldTour victory, and the points classification title at Tour of Britain.
Having made his debut in the Tour de France in 2016, Groenewegen scored his first Grand Tour stage win the following season on the Champs-Elysées. Among his 13 victories in 2018 were another two Tour stages, as well as a victory at the prestigious spring Classic, Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, and his first stage win at Paris-Nice.
While 2019 saw Groenewegen notch his biggest Classics win to date, the Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne, and another two stage wins at both the Tour de France and Paris-Nice.
2020 was marked by the consequences of him causing a major crash with Fabio Jakobsen in the Tour de Pologne. Jakobsen was seriously injured and Groenewegen received a partially-backdated nine-month ban that ended in May 2021.
After his return to racing, Groenewegen signed for the Australian team Bike Exchange-Jayco in 2022. He won his fifth Tour de France stage that summer He had 14 podiums for the season.
In 2023 he started the year with a stage win and overall points classification title at Saudi Tour, then amassed another 13 podiums, including a victory at the Veenendaal-Veenendaal Classic for a record fifth time in his career.
