Godfrey to decide future after Olympic decision

New Zealand’s Hayden Godfrey says he’ll wait for the International Cycling Union (UCI) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) to decide on track racing’s Olympic Games future before focusing on any one aspect of the sport. Godfrey’s comments came after the Subway-Avanti rider took honours in the New Zealand Club Championships road race.

“It is a case of wait and see right now,” admitted Godfrey. “The UCI have hinted that the omnium might be added to the Olympic programme. If that’s the case then it would become my sole goal.”

Godfrey won the 2008 UCI World Omnium Championship and has split most of 2009 between road and track races, both at home and abroad. “For now I have been doing more road again,” he said. “While it would be a pity to see the individual pursuit dropped, I think the Omnium would be a great event for the people to watch.”

The proposed changes include culling the individual pursuit and Madison in favour of the men's omnium and women's team sprint. A final decision on the changes, which have outraged many big-named riders, will be handed down by the UCI and IOC in December.

The changes are designed to bring parity to the men's and women's programmes, with five events for each at the 2012 Games in London.
