Biography:
Daniel Felipe Martínez, who goes by 'Dani', is among a number of young Colombian riders making an impact on the WorldTour. He is a four-time national time trial champion, has won a number of one-week stage races and turned heads in 2024 with his second overall at the Giro d'Italia.
After winning the junior road race title for his country and earning two junior medals at the Pan-American Road Championships including a gold in the time trial in 2013, Martínez then trained the next season at the UCI’s World Cycling Center in Switzerland. In 2015 he rode for Team Colombia, winning the mountains classification at Route du Sud and finishing eighth on GC at the hilly Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah.
He made his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d'Italia in 2016 when he moved to the Wilier Triestina pro team in Italy and had top 20 finishes at the end of the year at Tre Valli Varesine and Milano-Torino. The next year he finished top 10 at both of those one-day races, finished fourth on GC at Tour of Turkey and competed at the Giro a second time.
His goal to race with a WorldTour squad materialised in 2018 when he accepted a spot with EF Education, where he stayed for three seasons. He raced his first Tour de France that year as a 22-year-old, riding alongside Rigoberto Urán, one of his heroes as a young child growing up outside Bogotá.
In 2019 he won his first elite men's time trial at Colombian nationals and won a stage at Paris-Nice. That season he made his Vuelta a España debut to complete starts at all three Grand Tours.
His breakout season on the WorldTour came in 2020 when he took second overall at Tour Colombia and then won the GC little at Critérium du Dauphiné. He continued the momentum and won his first Tour de France stage, climbing Le Puy Mary for the stage 13 victory ahead of two Bora-Hansgrohe riders.
The next three seasons he rode for Ineos Grenadiers, his top results including fifth on GC at the 2021 Giro, a GC win at Itzulia Basque Country in 2022 and the GC title at Volta ao Algarve.
In 2024 he joined German WorldTour team Bora-Hansgrohe, promptly winning a fourth time trial national championship. Then he proved that the experience of nine Grand Tours with eight top 10s across stages at the Giro and finished second overall.
