In one of the most thrilling editions of Paris-Roubaix in recent memory, Mat Hayman (Orica-GreenEdge) edged out Tom Boonen (Etixx-Quickstep) from a five-man breakaway. Ian Stannard (Team Sky) topped Sep Vanmarcke (LottoNl-Jumbo) for the final podium position, while Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) was fifith.
Starting in Compiègne, the riders faced 52km of pave in the 257.5km of racing before finishing on the Roubaix velodrome. Hayman was part of a large breakaway that emerged after just 75km of racing and stayed up front as the favourites made their moves.
Pre-race favourites Fabian Cancellara (Trek-Segafredo) and Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) were left behind by Boonen, who split from the peloton with teammate Tony Martin driving the pace with more than 100km to go. A crash from Cancellara nearly took Sagan down, but put paid to both riders' chances to regain the front.
