Giro Donne 2009: Stage 9 Results

Cervelo TestTeam dominated the Giro Donne’s final stage, with Kirsten Wild sprinting to her second stage victory on the final stage. Italy’s Giorgia Bronzini (Safi - Pasta Zara Titanedi) finished second in the stage sprint from the 28-strong group.

Cervelo sports director Manel Lacambra said the stage victory was a nice surprise to cap off the event. "It was a very technical and dangerous course today," said Lacambra. "We tried to control the race and take care of Claudia. There was a break of 19 riders, but we were not thinking about winning the stage, only bringing the maglia rosa home safely.

“Bigla chased the gap to bring the breakaway back, and about two kilometres from the finish, Kirsten took the chance and won the stage,” he added. “These were perfect days in Italy; we won the Giro, we had several stage victories, and we also won the maglia ciclamino and the team classification."

Wild’s Cervelo team-mate Claudia Häusler secured the overall victory, maintaining her 30 second lead over America’s Mara Abbott (Team Columbia HTC Women). Swiss rider Nicole Brandli (Bigla Cycling Team) took third a further two minutes behind while another Cervelo rider, Emma Pooley, took fourth overall.

Häusler dedicated her women’s Giro d’Italia win to her squad. Her victory followed a third place finished at last year’s event.

"It was a victory for the entire team," said Häusler. "We all worked very hard for the victory and we are all very happy that we won the Giro. After the third place last year, it was amazing to be on the top of the podium - it was an unbelievable feeling.

“The best part was that had so much fun as a team the entire 10 days,” she added. “That was surely a contributor to our victory."
